playgrounds

Spaces that suggest play, without too many instructions. Modules that can stand alone or come together as part of a larger project. Walls, moving surfaces, openings, pastels, strange hammocks, wind chambers, elastic surfaces... Waiting to be discovered. Bodies enter, find their own rules, leave traces. Something to explore, not something to learn.

Holes

Hole

A wall filled with holes. Arms emerge from the openings, tracing lines across the surrounding surface without controlling what is produced, while others observe the compositions as they emerge. The wall separates and connects, conceals and reveals.

Jump

Jump

A passage made of elastic material that people move through. The body bounces, the mark rises. A device for expanding the possibilities of body and mark.

To draw to fly

To draw to fly

Hammocks suspended above a large sheet of paper. We lie back inside them. Cradles for swinging. For flying, tracing trajectories through the air, leaving marks on the landscape taking shape below us. Vertigo, dives, spirals.

Kinecube

Kinecube

A cube open on one side, its surfaces ready to be marked. An energetic game of bounces and marks. The body moves in all directions, propelled from one side to another, leaving traces along unpredictable trajectories. Am I the one marking the walls, or are they guiding me through three dimensions? The marks overlap and accumulate until not a patch of white is left.

Padiglione [Place]

A suspended structure, a membrane between earth and air. We curl up at its centre, listening: the crackle of a branch, the whisper of the wind, the rumble of a distant plane. Each person traces their own coloured line towards whatever calls to them. A map gradually emerges from the collective action: marks radiating outwards from the centre, curving towards where the sound is most dense.
“Padiglione [Place]” is a play on words that brings together hearing — the auricle, or outer ear — and art — the exhibition pavilion —, reality and symbol. The ear, the organ of balance, becomes an image of our search for harmony with the nature that surrounds us.

Rodeo

Rodeo

Drawing tables as mechanical bulls. One person sits for a portrait while the other tries to draw them. But the surface rocks, jolts, changes direction, throwing every attempt at control off course. The portrait breaks apart, derails, takes unexpected turns. All around them, walls covered with impossible, catastrophic, comic portraits.

Wind chamber

Wind chamber

A room-as-device. People enter with a blank sheet of paper and a pastel in hand. Jets of air rise through perforations in the floor, lifting the paper and sending it flying chaotically. The sheet is chased, marked with the pastel whenever its path is crossed, before it darts away again. Drawing as a playful response to the movement of air.
