Segni mossi is a research project founded in 2014 by visual artist Alessandro Lumare and choreographer Simona Lobefaro to investigate the relationship between movement, space and mark-making with people of all ages and abilities.
Since 2015, in collaboration with the Mus-e Italia Foundation, it has run annual workshops in Rome's public schools, promoting the value of difference through art. This was the first of a network of collaborations that has grown over the years to involve cultural centres, festivals, universities and community spaces across 35 countries worldwide, delivering hundreds of participatory events and training courses, reaching over 10,000 people.
This sustained work earned Segni mossi selection, in 2017 and 2019, among the 100 most innovative education projects in the world by HundrED, and its inclusion, over 2021–2023, as the "Movimento e Segno Grafico" module in the "Educando in Danza" programme at Italy's National Academy of Dance. Its pedagogical impact is now also the subject of an ethnographic study by Texas State University (San Marcos, USA), and has been discussed in university theses and presented at international conferences in the field.
In 2026 the project broadened its scope into new formats: in Seoul, at Museum 1101 / ArtCenter IDA, it presented a two-chapter exhibition — "Dance and Draw" (January–May) and "Every Body Marks" (June–October) — tracing 12 years of practice through participatory installations and marks made by the public; in August, with "Unfolding," it led the first edition of a five-day retreat at Loural Ecovillage in Portugal, giving participants access to Segni mossi's own generative creative process through movement, mark-making and somatic practices in dialogue with the landscape; and in September it opened the sixth edition of the Babele festival in Gallipoli with "Segni Mossi Parade," a participatory action spreading through the streets and social fabric of the city.
In March 2027 it opens new directions of research: a dialogue with the body of work of a visual artist, through "Incontro Corpo"— a session developed for the Museu Tàpies in Barcelona as part of the "Segni, semi" programme — alongside collaborations currently being planned with J. F. Oberlin University (Machida, Tokyo) and the Facultad de Educación y Trabajo Social at the Universidad de Valladolid (Spain).
